Out of Bounds:
Safety and Health Issues
Out of Bounds features internet resources "outside" of the Coaches Learning Network
that may be helpful and/or insightful for football coaches. Out of Bounds Safety and
Health Issues links include topics on proper tackling, alcohol and the athlete,
steroid research, understanding injuries, and football-related injury data.
See What You Hit (Video) The Spine in Sports Foundation
This 12-minute video is an important safety tool that coaches at all levels should share with coaches, players and parents. This video features former NFL star defensive lineman Charles Haley, and includes outstanding on-field demonstrations of proper tackling techniques. It also goes into great detail on how to prevent factors that can lead to serious injuries on the field.
Heads Up, Reducing the Risk of Head and Neck Injuries in Football (Video), National Athletic Trainers’ Association
An extremely well-made and informative 15-minute video that should be viewed by coaches at all levels. This is one of the best tools I have ever seen for teaching safety and the “correct contact technique”
Annual Survey of Football Injury Research 1931-2012 National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research
This annual report prepared for the AFCA, NCAA and NFSHSA is a good resource for football related injuries. It includes several tables that recount year by year data as well as discussions and recommendations regarding preventing head and neck injuries and heat stroke and heat exhaustion. It is an important overview for coaches at all levels.
For the Athlete: Alcohol and Athletic Performance (PDF) Gina Firth, M.A., L.M.H.C., N.C.C., Luis G. Manzo, Ph.D., Staff Psychologist and Coordinator of Alcohol and Drug Treatment Services, University of Notre Dame
This is a very informative brochure developed specifically for the athlete. It discusses how alcohol affects muscle development and recovery, the ability to learn new plays and strategies, nutrition and endurance, how to recognize at-risk behavior related to alcohol use, and how to tell if a friend is having problems related to alcohol.
Research Report Series: Anabolic Steroid Abuse (PDF), National Institute on Drug Abuse
This is an excellent overview of steroids and the effects of abuse. It covers what steroids are, how anabolic steroids are abused, and the health consequences of steroids regarding hormonal, musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, liver, skin, infection and psychiatric issues.
Physical Therapy Corner: Burner Syndrome, Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma
A good overview on burners or stingers. Research shows that 65% of all college players had a burner during their career, but 70% said they never reported the injury. This material covers symptoms, how the injury happens, treatment, and exercises that can reduce burners.
